PROGRAM NOTES

“The Himalayas Suite”  is a musical portrayal of the South Asian area and the places around it, which are dominated by the biggest mountain range on Earth, among them, the towering highest mountain: Mount Everest. During the work, the music will depict different aspects such as the splendour of the beautiful and imposing mountain scenery, the peaceful night, the people, their religion and mystical legends.

The work begins with a majestic opening of the main theme of the mountains introduced by the horns that will develop on an ostinato by the high pitched woodwinds and the sleigh bells, depicting the snow falling down from the clouds (‘The Roof of the World: Mount Everest’). During the nights in the mountainous area, the sky is usually clear, and the stars light the mountains together with the moon. The animals rest peacefully while shooting stars cross the sky (‘The Starry Night). Not every night is so calm, and sometimes the clouds cover the sky and bring heavy storms. During the night, a storm approaches, but disappears quickly just as it had arrived.

The Himalayas span over four countries with different cultures and religions, but the predominant ones are Hinduism and Buddhism. During the storm, the distant bells of a nearby temple can be heard. Native people start meditating by uttering mantras. For them, doing this is a way to reach Buda’s state of mind (‘The Ceremony: Temple Ritual’). At the end of this section, above the main theme and while its cellule is repeated quickly, we will listen to two Hindu and Buddhist melodies based on the mantras “Om Namah Shivaya” and “Om Mani Padme Hum”.

There are lots of myths and legends about the Himalayas, but one of the best known one is Shambhala, that according to Tibetan-Buddhist and Hindu traditions and beliefs, is a mythical kingdom hidden somewhere in the Himalayan range (‘The Legend: Shambhala’). Lots of explorers have dared to search for the empire on different expeditions, but it is said Shambhala is a pure land within the human sphere, and unless you have the merit and the real karmic association, you can’t really get there. The legend says there will be 32 kings in Shambhala, and each one will reign for 100 years, but in the 32nd reign, that of king Rudra Chakrin, evil will attack Shambhala with a huge army, equipped with terrible weapons. The horns announce the arrival of the enemy. In the great and last battle, goodness (Rudra) will stop all those who experience evil. After this battle, Rudra will only appear when the world enters an era of war and evil and everything is lost. When that happens, Rudra will come out of his secret city with a colossal army to repel and eliminate the evil and start a new era of purity. After this battle, although victorious, there has also been great loss. This is depicted by an internal fight of major and minor chords describing hope on one the hand and sorrow on the other. Shambhala rejoices in all its grandeur, a new era of purity and goodness has begun.

With lots of effort and dangers, reaching the crown of Everest is a reward and satisfaction for all mountaineers (‘The Summit: Finale’). The work returns to the main theme of the mountains, retaking the first theme of ‘The Starry Night’ in a majestic way while the tubular bells leads the main motif and closes with an epic finale with the horns motif depicting the view of the Himalayas seen from the very top peak of Everest while the sun lowers with its midday intensity. Several elephants can be observed far away running in the distance.

 II. ••• "Fire"
III. ••• "Water"
IV. ••• "Earth" (With an additional subsection titled "Finale: The Four Elements Together")

THE FOUR ELEMENTS
Video of the world premiere performance, full work. Premiered in the auditorium of Bilbao's  J. C. Arriaga Conservatory on May 17th, 2019.

PROGRAM NOTES

“The Four Elements”  is a symphonic suite that portrays the main elements in nature: Air, Fire, Water and Earth. Since many ancient doctrines these elements were used to explain the patterns in nature and its complexity of all matter in terms of simpler substances. In different ancient cultures there is a fifth element: ether. The meaning of these elements varies depending on cultures, religions, philosophy and their beliefs. Some related them to mythology, others to cosmology, to atomism... But all the beliefs coincide in one thing:  the four elements together form the diagram of life, “the roots of everything”.

••• AIR •••

The work begins with a turbulent and violent wind, portrayed by the use of tone clusters, multiple wind effects and fast glissandos in the harp that gives way to the majestic Four Elements theme. The Air theme is introduced in minor tonality giving way to a calm melody that will develop unto the main Air theme again, —a simple but moving melody starting with an ascendant motif— this time in major tonality, played by the woodwinds, violins and then trumpets, in a question-and-answer along with the horns, violas and cellos playing a second melody —a warm triple-motif theme—, depicting the movement of the placid wind caressing gently the trees’ leaves.

••• FIRE •••

While the pleasant wind runs by, a sudden bass ostinato starts to sound together with the timpani, followed by another pattern by the high pitched woodwinds and glissandos by the violins, describing the unstoppable advance of the fire destroying everything on its way. This section is based on two main ostinatos —which go through different sections of the orchestra— that will develop with the use of tone clusters, multiple effects on the brass section, percussion... depicting the danger of this element. The two ostinatos will sound together while the brass, choir and organ introduce a dramatic melody. In the middle of the devastation, the ostinato returns to pianissimo while slowing down, depicting the struggle against the water, in transition to the next section.

•••  WATER •••

Over a pedal note by the low instruments, an up-and-down motif will sound, imitating the movement of the water. While this water-like figure flows, the oboe will introduce the Water theme, which will develop into a contrapuntal dialogue with the bassoon, flute, clarinet and English horn. The development of the section is taken up by the other instruments in the orchestra reaching a triumphant climax that depicts the water running through rivers and streams.

••• EARTH •••

The section begins just with the harmonic base before giving way to the Earth theme —a cantabile-like melody— played by English horn, flute and later clarinet that will develop on a question-and-answer dialogue with the bassoons, bass clarinet and then euphonium, that starts with the ascendant motif of the Air theme. The brass section will give way to a mild keyboard solo that brings the music back to the Four Elements theme, culminating into the climax picking up the four themes of each element together: trumpets and violins take up the Earth theme; horns, euphonium, violas and cellos play the ascendant and triplet-mode motifs of the Wind theme; the harp and the choir retake the up-and-down motif of the Water theme and at the last moment, the timpani and the gong take the role of the Fire —the main ostinato— together with other instruments to finally conclude in a explosive grand finale.

PROGRAM NOTES

“FIREWORKS AND PYROTECHNICS – A Festive Overture”  is a symphonic portrait that evokes different scenarios of a pyrotechnic show during a night festival in five distinctive themes, from romantic and magical pictures to the most grandiose and imposing ones, imitating several firecrackers, whistles and explosions through the orchestra, concluding in a barnstorming finale. Inspired by the International Firework Contest of Bilbao’s Big Week (“Semana Grande de Bilbao”) and the Fallas of Valencia, the work uses different musical techniques and resources as well as wide and extensive percussion instrumentation to achieve varied timbres and multiple effects in the orchestra.

The work begins with three timpani and bass drum strokes like the three bangers that announce the beginning of the spectacle. A short introduction gives step to the loud main theme —pyrotechnic theme— of the work, a majestic melody played boldly by the trumpets and horns in unison accompanied by a strong rhythm by the timpani, snare drum and trombones, a fast triplet motif by the high-pitched woodwinds and a strident trill by the violins. Immediately after, the romantic theme is introduced, a passionate melody with the horns, violas and cellos playing a second melody in canon, depicting those couples in love enjoying the views while some heart-shaped fireworks explode in the starry sky. A short and calmer fragment follows then, over an arpegiate ostinato, portraying the magical moments in which golden and bright waterfalls slowly fall from the clouds.

Then, the music imitates the sound of firework’s whistles and explosions through the orchestra, using fast chromatic scales, slide whistle, ratchet, whip, mutes in the brass section, dissonances, high-pitched trills, strong bass drum and timpani strokes together with the basses and glissandos in the xylophone, harps and strings. We can hear a kind of march style on an ascending and descending chromatic melody. This gimmicky passage will continue until returning to the romantic theme again, this time while the melody of the main theme sounds at the same time as the romantic one, and the high-pitched woodwinds add a chromatic triplet motif in reference to the whistles of fireworks. The romantic theme’s head will develop, giving way to a tranquil passage with an arpegiate motif that reminds us of the one heard before in the magical moments theme.

The gunpowder theme —with a clear oriental air using the pentaphone minor scale— will be introduced by the bare horns that will develop into a bass ostinato, a noticeable rhythm and a second melody by the woodwinds. The melodies and ethnic percussion such as temple blocks or gong will help in achieving that characteristic Asian sonority. While this music remains, the march in the previous section will sound again, this time along with the gunpowder theme played by muted trumpets that will lead the theme to a dramatic orchestral tutti and also into a brilliant major tonality.

The main theme will sound for the last time before playing the romantic theme again, this time with an added chromatic descent motif by the horns, depicting the whistling of the fireworks that brings the music to the great finale, using the head of the main theme over a tonic pedal note. The timpani, the ratchet and the gong represent the last noisy explosions while the string section continues whistling, reaching a tremendous climax to finally conclude as it began but announcing the end of the show.

Work for Band and Alto Saxophone Soloist where the polyrhythm and jazz find each other. The string bass starts the work on a walking ostinato with continuous alternations between 3/4 and 4/4, giving way to the first theme introduced by the soloist. This will develop until the whole band play the theme in a triple-canon. After some optional improvisations and a muted trumpet solo over a tipical harmonic bass, a timpani and drums break will give way to the second section in a 5/4 measure, where the soloist presents a new theme. Act immediately, the woodwinds will repeat it while the trumpets and saxophones introduce a second melody over it. After a short cadenza, the music returns to the main theme, more intense this time, bringing the work to a merry and jocose end.
